Job requirements:

The Construction and Maintenance department has an immediate opening for a qualified journeyman level ELECTRICIAN. Completion of I.B.E.W. apprenticeship program or equivalent experience is necessary. State of California general electrician certification required. Duties include installing, connecting, testing, and maintaining electrical systems for a variety of purposes. An example of at least two years experience in trouble shooting commercial and industrial components is essential. Experience in high voltage as well as other construction field trades (i.e., plumbing, welding, H.V.A.C., masonry, etc) is highly desirable. This position will require seven day availability, evening and daytime hours for special events and other Zoo activities as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

The Education Specialist creates, coordinates, maintains, and evaluates Society educational programs and materials including classes, workshops, tours, and special events.  This position requires excellent interpersonal, communication (written and oral) and supervisory skills.  Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in education, science, recreation or a related field.  An example of  work experience would be at least two years. Experience in an education department in a zoo, museum or other informal learning center is preferred. Candidate must be self-directed and have the ability to succeed with minimal supervision. Strong computer skills are necessary (i.e., Microsoft Office). Familiar with Web blogging, videoconferencing, digital puppeteer programs and audio visual equipment is a plus. The selected candidate might be in charge of Zoo sleepover programs, teambuilding programs, elementary and middle school programs, family and pre-school programs, behind-the-scenes tours, teen programs, scavenger hunt programs, Scout and youth programs, etc.  This position may require overnight assignments with the sleepover/camping programs.  Final candidates may be required to submit additional evidence of work and/or testing.   In addition, applicants must meet the qualifications of the essential functions of the job.

Guide, under direction, educates and interprets the Society's collection for students enrolled in summer camp for children ages 4 to 13.  These are short-term positions to last 2 to 3 months. The Educators must be able to deliver all content with FUN in mind and have strong behavior management skills while using a positive approach to the challenges associated with student behavior.  Selected candidate must be able to use audio-visual equipment, handle artifacts and biofacts, collect program feedback, escort groups behind the scenes and monitor program materials and props.  Ability to have an inclusive philosophy and welcome children with special needs is necessary. These positions will not be handling animals.  Knowledge of principles and practices of teaching and learning theory are required.  Skills to teach and motivate all grade levels on a variety of themes are essential.  Applicants must be available to work from Mid-June to Mid-August, Monday-Friday. Hours will vary from 2-40 per week based on class enrollment.  A valid California driver license is required for some assignments.
